Beja’s history, traditions, and creative identity were recently highlighted by National Geographic Spain following an experience in the Alentejo city that included a visit to Holiday Inn Beja and its restaurant, Chaparro Alentejano. Published in the magazine’s Viajes section, the article presents Beja as an authentic destination where music and poetry remain deeply connected to everyday life.

Away from the crowds of Portugal’s most visited destinations, Beja offers a more peaceful and genuine travel experience. Its cobblestone streets, traditional stores, whitewashed houses, and historic monuments invite visitors to discover the city at the relaxed pace that defines the Alentejo.

The National Geographic Spain journey included some of Beja’s most important landmarks. Among them was the city’s medieval castle, home to a 40-meter-high keep that offers panoramic views over the surrounding fields and vineyards. The experience also explored Beja Cathedral, whose architecture brings together Gothic, Renaissance, Manueline, and Baroque influences, as well as the city’s Roman, Visigothic, and Islamic heritage.

The article also draws attention to the musical traditions that continue to shape the region’s identity. Its façade features two murals created by renowned Portuguese artist Vhils in honor of poets Florbela Espanca and Mário Beirão, both closely connected to the city. Inside the hotel, a curated display of books, manuscripts, and personal objects further introduces guests to their lives and work.

These elements reflect Holiday Inn Beja’s close connection to its destination, transforming the hotel into a starting point for discovering the stories, personalities, and artistic traditions that have shaped the region.

Alentejo Flavors and Live Music at Chaparro Alentejano

The visit continued at Chaparro Alentejano, Holiday Inn Beja’s restaurant, where National Geographic Spain experienced the region through its food, wine, music, and storytelling.

During the meal, Jorge Benvida and other musicians performed a selection of cante alentejano and original songs, while writer Fernando Guerreiro shared short stories inspired by local life. Together, these performances created an immersive experience that brought the cultural character of Beja directly to the table.

The restaurant was also highlighted as an introduction to the cuisine of southern Portugal. The menu presented regional flavors through dishes such as Alentejo-style pork, octopus with potatoes and onions, açorda with egg and cod, and lamb accompanied by a red wine and honey emulsion. Paired with wines from the region, the experience celebrated the generous and convivial spirit of Alentejo dining.
